Shop and Barn Kits in Alberta

Engineered to Your Snow Load and Chinook Winds

Alberta is a shop province. The building most people here are pricing is a heated 40x60 with a tall eave and a bay big enough for the truck, and it has to stand up to Chinook winds that arrive at highway speed and a freeze-thaw cycle that can move a foundation twice in one winter. Every frame we ship is drawn to your loads and the National Building Code Alberta Edition, then stamped before fabrication.

Alberta Shop & Barn Kits – Steel Building Packages

What Alberta does to a building

Alberta asks two different things of a frame depending on where you are, and a third thing of the insulation everywhere.

The south - Calgary, Lethbridge and the Chinook belt

Wind governs here, not snow. Chinooks load a wall in a way ordinary bracing is not designed for, so the reinforcement goes into the walls and the anchor pattern rather than the roof.

The Rockies and the north

Alpine snow loads are among the heaviest in the province. Purlins tighten and gauge goes up, and the roof rather than the wall becomes the governing case.

Province-wide - the temperature swing

Alberta winters are brutal on an uninsulated steel building. Condensation on the inside of the panel is the most common complaint we hear, and it is an insulation and vapour problem rather than a steel problem. Specify the insulation package with the frame, not afterwards.

Three recent Alberta builds are shown below, from a woodland garage to industrial storage in Fort McMurray.

Every building here started as a kit and ended up on a real property. Each one is engineered to the snow, wind and seismic loads at its own address before anything is fabricated.

Popular Agricultural Barn Kits

These are the sizes Alberta farms and acreages order most. Every one is clear span, so nothing stands in the middle of your floor.

24x24 to 30x40 - the acreage shop. Residential garages and hobby shops around Edmonton and Airdrie, mostly about getting a vehicle out of the winter.

40x60 - the Alberta default. Farm shop, equipment repair bay, heated working space. Lethbridge and Red Deer order more of these than anything else.

60x40 to 60x66 - the farm shop with a repair bay. Room to bring machinery inside and still work around it.

48x36 - the horse barn. Stalls and a tack room, with the option of a raised centre aisle and lean-tos on each side.

60x100 and up - machinery sheds and industrial storage. Oil and gas equipment, heavy machinery depots and grain storage around Calgary and Grande Prairie.

Barndominiums in Alberta

A shop and a home in one shell, engineered as a single frame. If that is what you are planning, start here.

Getting it to your site

Three to four weeks into the Calgary-Edmonton corridor once drawings are approved. Fort McMurray, Peace River and the far north are routed as heavy freight and quoted case by case rather than estimated. Because every frame is engineered to your address, freight is planned with the order rather than added at the end.

Frequently Asked Questions in Ontario

How deep do the footings need to go in Alberta?

Deeper than most people expect, and the freeze-thaw cycle matters as much as the depth. We supply the exact reaction loads so your foundation contractor can design a floating slab, frost wall or pile foundation for your soil rather than a provincial average.

Do I need a building permit in Alberta?

In most cases yes, and requirements differ between municipalities and counties. Farm buildings can sit under different rules than a residential shop, so confirm with your local authority before ordering. We supply drawings engineered to the National Building Code Alberta Edition and sealed for the application.

Can I put the building up myself?

Most of our customers do, or they hire a local crew. The frame bolts together and ships with a full drawing set, and we can point you to installers across most of the province.

Why does my steel building sweat inside?

Condensation, and it is an insulation and vapour-barrier question rather than a defect. Alberta temperature swings make it worse than almost anywhere. Specify the insulation package with the frame rather than adding it later and the problem does not start.
