Choosing your building: span, height, doors and frame type

This is the category that saves the most money, because it is where the irreversible decisions are made. Width, clear height, door openings, roof pitch and frame type are fixed the day you sign the order. Everything else — finishes, interior walls, even insulation to a degree — can be changed later. A building that is four feet too narrow or two feet too short is a building you live with, or replace.

The aim here is to get you to a specification you can hand to three suppliers and receive comparable quotes on. An end wall designed to come off, a lean-to allowed for in the frame, or a column layout that suits a future mezzanine costs very little at the order stage and is expensive or impossible afterwards.
